A fine and rare Longshan Culture Amphora "Gui", ca.2800-2000 BC. LongShang generally refers to 3 synchronous phases known by their gographical locations: Shangdong, Henan-Hebei, and Shaanxi-Longxhan. This rare tripod form, known as "gui", is only found in the eastern regions of Longshan. Other tripod amphoric forms were known in other regions, but this unique form of a bird beak-like spout is unique to this region alone. The black pottery body is very thin and hard. The gui is designed with 3 large malmory-like legs and strap handle. The rope and rivet designs are applied and reminiscent to metalwork. This also shows an culture that had a taste for elaborate forms and decoration. The Longshan culture also practiced monogamy and advanced agriculture to being their primary source of food. Hunting and gathering became a secondary food source.
The condition of this gui is another reason for its rarity. It is in undamaged condition. Many pottery ware of this era suffers from damage. A truly rare find.
b5/24
