Rare Lindsay Two Shot Martial Size Pistol with Case and Accessories

Manufactured in the early 1860s by Union Knife Company, Naugatuck, Ct. for the inventor John Lindsay with only about 100 manufactured. The pistol is chambered for a 45 caliber superposed load and the single trigger operates the double hammers in proper sequence. This mechanism was also employed in a military musket and is one of the distinct oddities in American arms collecting. Lindsay was an employee of the Springfield Armory and his attempts at a government contract for the pistols was unsuccessful. The top of the barrel at the breech is marked "LINDSAY'S/YOUNG AMERICAN/PATENT'D OCT. 9, 1860". The serial number is marked on the underside of the frame and barrel at the breech and on the left side of the frame under the grip panel. The frame and trigger guard are brass and it is fitted with smooth grips which are also numbered to the gun. The partitioned case holds a plain powder flask, a Colt's patent marked iron bullet mold and two cap tins.

Very good plus. The barrel has traces of blue with the balance a mottled gray patina showing some minor pitting. The frame and trigger guard have an even aged patina. The grips are fine with a small hairline crack on the bottom (left panel) and some minor handling marks. Mechanically fine. The refinished, relined custom case is very good with a repaired lid and relined interior.
