Rare Joslyn Model 1855 percussion “Monkey Tail” SRC by Waters, .54 cal., 22-1/2” round barrel, blue and case hardened finish, wood stock, brass barrel band, trigger guard, and butt plate, serial #5 S. This crisp gun is in overall fine to excellent condition showing an even plum brown patina on the barrel covering approx. 98%; plus approx. 98% of original case colors, both inside and out of the breech lever, interior action, lockplate and saddlering bar base; the hammer has darkened a bit but still shows traces of original case color; brass mountings are un-cleaned and have a beautiful taffy colored patina with the barrel band stamped with “X 6” on the right side; the action is crisp, the markings are sharp, the bore is fine and the wood stock is also fine with minor scattered mars and scratches from storage and a nickel-size old mar on the left front area of the fore stock behind the barrel band. It is the cataloger’s opinion that this carbine saw little if any actual firing in the field given the its general fine condition and the pristine nature of its action’s interior. Flayderman estimates less than 1,500 manufactured between 1855 and 1856, the earliest of the breech-loading carbines made under patents of B.F. Joslyn and the last firearms made by the A.H. Waters firm. Museum quality or suitable for even the most discriminating private collector. Est.: $7,000-$14,000.
