Rare Joslyn Model 1855 Monkey Tail Carbine
This carbine was one of approximately 1500 manufactured by A. H. Waters of Milbury, Massachusetts in 1855 and 1856. These Joslyn carbines were issued on a limited basis to several Federal volunteer cavalry regiments early in the Civil War (The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Ohio cavalry were each issued 100 of these as well as the 6th, which were issued 250). This example is without maker markings and has no ordnance proof or inspection marks. It has a pinched front sight and a folding leaf rear sight graduated to 8. The barrel was once blue and the lock, breech and breech lever were casehardened. The single barrel band, trigger guard and buttplate are brass. The oil finish walnut stock is fitted with a saddle ring bar with ring on the left flat.

Fine. The barrel retains approximately 30% faded original blue (mostly near the breech) with the balance a smooth brown patina. The lock, breech and breech lever have a mottled silver-gray patina with scattered traces of faded case colors. The brass has a smooth dark aged patina. The stock is excellent with the exception of a barely noticeable hairline crack near the lock, along with a few very small chips and some scattered minor dings. One does not find these very often!
