Rare Joseph Golcher US Model 1794 Horsemens pistol contract pattern in 72 caliber marked PHILADELPHIA on lock plate with 13 2/4" barrel, full stock the left side of stock inspector stamped H for Major Samuel Hodgen. Hodgen had been appointed Secretary of Military Stores by George Washington and placed in charge of developing pattern pistols and muskets by Henry Knox Secretary of War whose recommendation for two new arsenals and contract for 7000 muskets and 1000 Horsemens pistols has been approved. Joseph Perkins and Joseph Golcher were chosen by Hodgen to build the pattern for the pistols. Condition of this pistol remains very good, barrel shows a silver gray to brown patina, engraved lockplate with moderate surface erosion a silver gray patina as does hammer and frizzen, the pinned walnut stock with two period repairs fitted with brass butt cap, engraved trigger guard and finial, side plate, medallion and cleaning rod mounts.
