Origin: Japan,
Age/Period: ca.18th century, Edo Period,
Dimensions: 2-3/8" tall;
Rare Japanese Wood Netsuke depicting Fukurokujiu, Edo Period, 18th c. Fukurokujiu, (God of Longevity) and one of the 7 Shinto deities. This netsuke is well carved from an unknown species of hardwood. Fukurokujiu is carved with a very large head, large ears, a "football" against his forehead (apparently kicked up to his forehead with his right extended right foot), and with his right-hand holding a scroll or fan. The primitive himatoshi are quite large and vertically cored from the base up through the lower half of Fukurokujiu's backside. The netsuke has a wonderful deep, rubbed patina.
Condition Consensus: Very Fine to Extremely Fine Condition.
