<td width="100%">
A rare and unusual Japanese "porcelain" cloisonne vase, ca. 1860. Tsukamoto Kaisuke (1828-1867), was credited for this special, albeit, short-live innovation. Kaisuke was the most important student of Kaji Tsunekichi, (1803-1883), who is credited as the founder of the rennaisance of Japanese cloisonne. Dimensions are 4 1/2" tall, 4" diameter (widest). Unlike most cloisonne forms that involves copper, silver or gold wire cloisons to be attached to a copper base, this method affixed the wire cloisons to a porcelain body prior to firing. This was a relatively short-lived innovation, not very popular during the time of production, probably because enamels on porcelain tended to be dull in appearance and were liable to cracking. For these reasons, this innovation lived for only a decade, and was never again produced. This fine vase is rather exceptional. It has copper wires in tightly clustered, individual small sky blue 'leaf' patterns that cover the entire exterior of the vase. Interspersed are floral and butterfly cloisons. The neck has a floral collar of black beading with indigo blue leaves and white and pink floral blooms. There are 2 large inset panes with black beading and indigo blue leaves with floral cloisons in green, yellow, pink and red. The mouth rim and foot rim are unglazed. While the inner foot ring is clear glazed and finely crizzled. The overall condition consensus is Very Fine condition with no repairs.
