Rare "Japanese Navy Issue" Smith & Wesson New Model Number Three Single Action Revolver

Introduced in 1879, it estimated that the Japanese government purchased nearly a third of all new Model Number three production. Kure naval base acceptance stamp of anchor and waves is marked on the bottom of the frame forward the trigger guard. This particular revolver has an unusual 6" barrel and was never fitted with a lanyard swivel or trigger spur. Pinned blade front and notch rear sights on the barrel, with two-line "REISSUE JULY 25, 1871" markings flanked with Maltese crosses. Typical of these Japanese contract guns is the mismatched cylinder "24579" and barrel latch "31804".

Manufacture: Smith & Wesson

BBL: 6" round
Stock:
Gauge: 44 Russian
Finish: blue
Grips: checkered walnut

Good. The revolver retains strong traces of original blue finish mostly in sheltered areas showing an overall dark patina with patches of pitting scattered throughout. The front sight shows heavy oxidation. The grips have been replaced and are fair with smooth checkering. While the Japanese may have purchased the bulk of the production, they rarely made their way back to the states and these guns are highly prized by collectors today.
