Rare Japanese Flintlock Netsuke Tender Starter, or ''Hi-uchi Bukuro''. Body made of a soft metal brass alloy with silver and copper flower decorations. Dating from the Edo period (1603-1868) and used as a lighter for fire starting or to light the match wick for the Tanegashima rifle. Formally found in iron, soft metal examples tend to be attributed to higher ranking samurai or noblemen. Spring-loaded lock with flintlock type hammer and snaphaunce style frizzen striking plate. Condition is excellent showing some patination. Mechanism is in working order with release button. Est.: $1,000-$1,500.
