Manufactured from 1863 to 1865. Dual ignition six-shot cylinder; combination percussion 31 caliber with removable nipples to convert to 32 rimfire. This revolver retains 5 of the 6 nipples. The top barrel flat is marked "J. REID N.Y. CITY / PATD. APL. 28. 1863.", the serial number is marked on the butt and the inside right grip panel is marked with the matching serial number in pencil, and the partial serial number "70"is marked on the loading lever. The Model 4 features include the requirement of a wrench to loosen barrel and partially unscrew to remove cylinder, loading lever under the barrel and exposed barrel threads between front of cylinder and frame. Loading gate on the right side of the frame which swivels upward, and has the rare Tileston patent cylinder locking device marked also with the patent date. Fitted with smooth rosewood grips.

Condition: Very good plus. The barrel retains 20% thinning original blue finish with the balance a smooth brown patina. The remaining surfaces have a mottled gray patina with a smooth dark patina on the loading lever. There is some scattered light pitting on the frame. The grips are very fine with most of the varnish, some mild dings and scratches and mild chip on the right panel. The markings are clear. Mechanically fine.
