Rare James Knox Polk Inaugural Medal
James Knox Polk Inaugural Medal, 61mm diameter, bronzed copper, U.S. Mint, 1845. The dated obverse depicts a left-facing, draped bust of Polk while the reverse carries his inaugural date within an oak wreath. Thick, and engraved in ultra high relief with a spectacular old patina. A few small dings with some finish wear evident mostly on the sides. Overall extremely fine condition. Although a U. S. Mint product, this is not an "official" inaugural medal as such were not issued until 1901. A very few rare medals were unofficially struck, however, for Van Buren, Tyler, Polk, and Taylor. These presentation pieces used dies normally associated with the Indian peace medals of the administration honored. It's a strange paradox that these medals are worth relatively little given their great rarity, but they are too elusive for a collectors' market to become established.

Shipping: Miscellaneous Collectibles, Smal (view shipping information)
