This is an excellent original example of a late WWII German turret sniper rifle that was manufactured by the J. P. Sauer & Sohns factory in Suhl, that has been fitted with a Joseph Schneider sniper scope. During WWII there were three primarily factories involved in producing sniper rifles for all German forces; Steyr, Mauser and J. P. Sauer & Sohns factories with the Mauser factory producing the vast majority of all sniper rifle versions. The Sauer version of the high turret are quite rare and desirable. The turret mounted sniper rifles were considered one of the best and most efficient designed sniper rifle based on the K98, however' it was also the most time consuming to actually produce. This series of rifle was in service from 1939 until the end of the war. The top of the receiver ring is covered by the front turret, however, it is assumed it is marked with the late war "ce" coded receiver. The left side of the receiver and barrel are both marked with only a single eagle firing proof next to the single "eagle 37" Waffenamt proof. The receiver side wall marked in script letters "Mod. 98" as used by the Sauer & Sohns factory. The rifle is fitted with an all blued turret sniper scope made by Joseph Schneider Company which correctly carries the wartime code of "dkl" on the side of the scope tube. Although the scope and mounts are not matching to the rifle they do have the desirable serial numbers on the lower left side of the turret base ring and the lower front edge of the rear scope ring base. The side of the scope tube is correctly stamped; "DIALYTAN 4X 2475/DKL/ with a blue "+", indicating that it could be used for cold weather. It has the correct elevation adjustments on top of the elevation knob that graduated from 1 to 8, for 100-800 meters. The rifle has the typical late war stamped and welded barrel bands with a wartime stamped trigger guard and floor plate with the single "Eagle 135" Waffenamt proof. It has a correct war-time bolt with the bolt guide rib on the side with a unnumbered milled safety. The rifle is equipped with a ramp front sight and tangent rear sight graduated to 2,000 meters. The rifle has a late war laminated stock and handguard with cupped buttplate. The right side of the buttstock is marked with a "eagle / WaA135" proof. This rifle is complete with a set of black leather reproduction lens covers/scope caps and an original WWII metal scope can that is marked on the back side of the lid with a single eagle Waffenamt proof with the wartime code of "jvb". The scope can has a canvas carrying strap with a snap buckle on each end.
BBL: 23 inch round
Stock: laminated
Gauge: 7.92 mm Mauser
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 1693m
Condition: Excellent with 95% plus of the original blue finish overall with wear on the edges and high spots overall, with some light blue loss on the body from cycling the action. The scope retains 90% of the original blue finish with both ocular and objective end of the scope showing blue loss from light cleaning and or wear and rubbing from leather scope caps. The center section of the scope tube and rear end of the rain shield also show some minor browning from age. The optics are clear with a little haze, and the elevation knob works correctly. The stock and handguard are both in excellent condition, with clear markings on eh side, with minor handling marks and light pressure dents in a few places with two sets of slightly heavier cuts/scratches on the left side of the stock in front of the stock bolt. The leather lens caps are excellent new condition and the metal scope can has 95% of the wartime green paint with minor chips and nicks on the corners, with clear markings. An excellent example of an original WWII J.P. Sauer and Sohns K98 turret sniper rifle.
