Rare Indian Wars 1868 McClellan Cavalry saddle
with exposed rawhide seat, brass moldings on pommel and cantle, original single rivet stirrups, brass screwed fenders, girth and makers tag intact by C Prudden Philadelphia. Changes from 1859 to the 1868 was the addition of the brass moldings to prevent rawhide seats from splitting open and pinching riders skin, not working many of the commanders covered the seats in leather themselves. Clearly evident with this saddle both the right and left sides split, the left further cutout with a knife. By 1872 all saddle were ordered to be covered in leather and later changed to model 1874. A scarce addition for any Indian Wars, cavalry display, collection or a museum.
