Rare Gustave Young Factory Engraved Wesson Damascus Double Barrel Hammer Shotgun
Only about two hundred guns were made by the company but they were all high quality guns, selling for several times what guns made by the competition were selling for. The marking engraved on top of the barrel rib was "WESSON FIRE ARMS Co SPRINGFIELD MASS." There are no other markings on the exterior. Indications of the high quality of engraving on these guns include the engraving. Executed by Gustave Young, whom many believe to be the finest engraver of all time. The gun was patented by Daniel B. Wesson on Dec. 17, 1867 and the patent was assigned to the Wesson Fire Arms Co. It is not known why the new company was necessary as it had the same principals as Smith & Wesson. The company only lasted for four years and only produced around 219 shotguns. One reason for the high cost was the exact fit required for the fit of the new action. The action was cut away on the sides so checkered wood pieces could be inserted, thus lessening the weight of the piece. The buttplate is another weight saving device. The metal center was cut away and only the "skeleton" inlaid around the edge of the butt. The end grain of the wood was then checkered. This system saved weigh, but was highly labor intensive and was part of the reason for the high cost. The engraving by the Master Engraver in America at the time, Gustave Young, would not have added that much to the cost as the cost of engraving on the gun was only a couple dollars. The action was somewhat different from those used by other makers. The rear of the lever was lifted, removing a wedge from the rib extension on the barrel. This was similar to the system used by Remington on their first model shotguns seven years later. Chambered 2 3/4", choked improved cylinder/improved cylinder with extractor. Damascus barrels with casehardened action, hammers, trigger guard and skeletonized buttplate. The shotgun is mounted with a checkered forearm and straight grip stock with checkered bare portion of the butt and a silver initial oval. Length of pull is 13 3/4".

Very fine with most of the Damascus pattern remaining on the barrels. The frame, hammers and break lever retain 70% of the bright case colors (with the exception of the part of the frame which extends into the forearm, which has a smooth mottled gray patina). The trigger guard has a smooth gray patina with traces of faded case colors and the buttplate has a smooth mottled gray patina. There is a hole in the lower tang with replaced screw. The wood shows a couple of epoxy repairs on the forearm, (done after the gun was refurbished), as well as a few minor pressure dents and the forend insert is missing. The stock shows a few minor dings and dents and for the most part the checkering overall remains crisp. The markings are readable and the mechanics are excellent.
