Rare Green Nueva Cadiz Trade Bead Necklace
Offered in this lot is a rare green Nueva Cadiz bead necklace. Nueva Cádiz beads are related to Venetian chevron beads; both are compound layered glass beads made with the same technique. Unlike the Venetian chevrons, the Nueva Cádiz beads have only three layers, usually consisting of a dark core, a white layer, and a bright exterior; this is a rare collection of green beads. In form, they are squared tubes. The original place of manufacture for these trade beads remains a mystery, but they were likely produced in Bohemia or Venice. Beads of this type and quality were also made in the Netherlands during this period. A later generation of these beads, dating from the 19th and 20th centuries, was probably crafted in Venice. These later beads are found in Africa. There are twenty one Nueva Cadiz beads and one clear green faceted bead. The beads are 1/2" deep and wide and from 7/8" to 1 1/4" long. Provenance: letter of appraisal from Out-West Designs, L. W. Dinneen, dated May 2, 1999, with a value of $900.00. These beads and necklace are in good condition, with minor wear and damage, as expected given their age.
