Rare Fitted Case for a Pair of Colt Dragoon Pistols with Inscribed Tower Plaque

This is a nice example of a circa 1850s brass trimmed wooden case for a pair of Colt Dragoons. The case is constructed of walnut with inlaid brass edging and accents on the lid, as well as decorative trim and corner reinforcements. The case also has the brass corner reinforcements. The interior is lined with green felt and there are 9 compartments, three with lids. There is a brass escutcheon around the skeleton key hole (key not included). The lid has a inset plaque which reads "GUNS UNDER THE CHARGE OF H.M. OFFICE OF WORKS/"HORSE GUARDS PARADE"/TAKEN FROM AN OFFICER UNDER GRAND DUKE OF BADEN/No 358A TOWER INVENTORY". The case comes with a letter on "Guns With A History" letter head which explains that the H.M. Office of Works is the department that handles castle construction. The King's own architects and surveyors. The Horse Guards Parade is a parade ground next to Whitehall, London and that the only time that guns could have been taken from an officer under Duke of Baden was during the Crimean War, 1853 to 1856. At this time the researcher was unable to find record for the Tower inventory number. The researcher concluded that this case is definitely vintage 1850s.

Very good. There are a few minor wood fill repaired cracks and a few minor cracks in the lid. There are several scratches on the bottom. The brass has an aged patina. The lining is very good with a dime sized worn area on the wall of the front revolver compartment, otherwise only some minor soiling.
