Manufacturer: Lindner Model: Lindner Carbine
Designed and made by Edward Lindner of Manchester, New Hampshire, probably at Amoskeag Manufacturing Company. Only 892 of the First Type carbines were made and all were for military contracts (November, 1861, 391 to the 1st Michigan Cavalry and late 1863, 501 to the 8th West Virginia Mounted Infantry). The carbine has a fixed blade front sight and two-leaf folding rear sight mounted behind the breechblock. It is correctly marked, only on the top of the breechblock "EDWARD LINDNER'S/PATENT/MARCH 29, 1859". There is a small "J" on the right side of the breechblock and breech end of the barrel. A faint oval script inspection mark (AM?) is stamped on the stock comb just ahead of the buttplate tang. Mounted with a smooth one-piece oil-finished walnut stock with a metal forearm tip and sling ring on the left stock flat and carbine buttplate.
