Designed and made by Edward Lindner of Manchester, New Hampshire, probably at Amoskeag Manufacturing Company. Only 892 of the First Type carbines were made and all were for military contracts, (November, 1861, 391 to the 1st Michigan Cavalry and late 1863, 501 to the 8th West Virginia Mounted Infantry). The carbine has a fixed blade front sight and two-leaf folding rear sight mounted behind the breechblock. It is correctly marked, only on the top of the breechblock "EDWARD LINDNER'S/PATENT/MARCH 29, 1859". There is a small "J" on the right side of the breechblock and breech end of the barrel. A faint oval script inspection mark, (AM?), is stamped on the stock comb just ahead of the buttplate, also there are inspectors initials "E.J." stamped on the left side (flat), ahead of the wrist (below the saddle ring). The stock is oil-finished walnut, with a metal forearm tip and sling ring on the left stock flat. The right side of the buttstock is period scratched (or etched) "WCC".

Condition: Fine. The metal surfaces have a smooth silver gray and light brown patina with some scattered minor discoloration. There are a few dings on the lock. The stock is also fine with scattered minor dings and dents. The marking is clear. Mechanically excellent. A nice example of a rare First Type Lindner Carbine.
