Rare First Model Merrill Breech Loading Percussion Carbine
Blade front sight and 3 leaf rear sight, which doubles as the latch point for the breech lever. Equipped with a brass barrel band, trigger guard and patch box. The lock plate has a beveled edge and is marked with the serial number vertically at the rear of the lock and "J.H. MERRILL BALTO/ PAT. JULY.1858./ APL.9 MAY 21-28-61" marked below the bolster. Merrill's name and patent dates are marked on top of the breech latch. The serial number is also present on the breech latch. A sling bar and ring is mounted on the left side of the stock flat.

Condition: Good, with signs of extensive service use. A dark brown patina has formed on the barrel, receiver and lock, with heavy flash pitting. Markings on the lock and breech lever are light but legible. Stock is fair, with the comb whittled/sanded down and the stock is in fair condition and showing wear. This a nice example of a hard to find First Model Merrill Civil War carbine.
