Rare Ferrotype Jugate 1864 McClellan & Pendleton Supreme Ferrotype Jugate Rarity- the 1864 McClellan
Supreme Ferrotype Jugate Rarity- the 1864 McClellan & Pendleton. An item of astounding rarity and importance. Only perhaps 4 or 5 examples exist in the hobby, making it slightly rarer than its Lincoln & Johnson mate. Along with the 1920 Cox & Roosevelt, these three form the exclusive triumvirate of five-figure rarities required by every jugate collector to complete his run. In 1972 your writer sold an example privately for the then-astounding price of $2000, about $500 more than a "standard" Cox & Roosevelt was worth at the time. The U.I. "Chick" Harris Collection included an example, which was sold privately for a reported price in excess of $20,000. In 2003, a well-known Chicago area firm auctioned another for $25,775. Joe Brown purchased the present copy in the early 1990s from a well-known New Jersey auction. It then had only the McClellan picture, the Pendleton was missing- and it still is! But Joe Brown prevailed on long-time friend Chick Harris to allow him to make a good copy of the Pendleton photo in his example. It is an excellent reproduction, virtually undetectable without magnification. To our knowledge, the examples cited are the only ones known. The one sold in 1972 came from the legendary Fred Chittock collection; the one auctioned near Chicago had come from the equally legendary Neil Porter collection, where it had resided since the 1960s. And, of course, the Harris example had been in that fabled collection for an equally long period. Thus, to the best of our knowledge, the only example to surface in some four decades is the present one, eagerly acquired by the astute Joe Brown. Aside from the missing Pendleton photo, this copy is in superb condition, with much of the original silvering present in the brass shell frame, and original T-bar pin on reverse. Measures 32mm x 32mm. An opportunity that may not come again for many, many years.
