Rare Factory Engraved Sharps Model 1853 Slant-Breech Shotgun
A rare example of the approximately 320 Sharps Model 1853 Slant-Breech Shotguns manufactured by the Sharps Rifle Co., in Hartford, Connecticut, between 1854 and 1856. The right side of the frame has a spring-loaded stud that retains the lever hinge pin. This stud identifies the shotgun as a Model 1853 manufactured by Sharps in Hartford rather then the Model 1852 with lever hinge pin retaining spring manufactured by Robbins & Lawrence in Windsor, Vermont. The shotgun generally resembles the Sharps Model 1853 Carbine and has a 21 1/2 inch round barrel, carbine forearm and Sharps patent pellet primer on the lock. However, the shotgun has a 26 bore barrel, distinctive sighting groove on the top of the receiver and brass pin front sight. The smoothbore barrel has no provision for a rear sight, the left side of the stock and receiver are not fitted with the sling ring and bar and the stock does not have a patch box. The shotgun has a straight grain walnut stock and forearm. The stock is fitted with an iron buttplate. The forearm has a pewter tip and is secured by screw-fastened, casehardened iron barrel band. The shotgun is factory engraved with the distinctive tight Sharps scrollwork on a punch-dot background. The engraving covers approximately three inches of the top of the barrel at the breech and nearly all the frame, lock plate and upper and lower tangs. The raised portion of the slant breech on the left side of the frame is delicately engraved with a game scene that depicts a duck or goose on a pond. The top and right side of the hammer, the bottom of the breech lever and the heel of the buttplate are covered with the engraved scrollwork. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "SHARPS RIFLE/ MANUFG. CO./HARTFORD CONN." in three lines between the barrel band and the frame. The left side of the frame is stamped: "SHARPS/PATENT/1848" within an engraved shield. The lock plate is stamped: "SHARPS/PATENT/1852" in an engraved shield. The serial number, "8804" is stamped on the top of the frame in a scrollwork panel. Sharps Model 1853 shotguns are rare. Factory engraved Model 1853 shotguns are extremely rare. On page 59 of SHARPS FIREARMS, author Frank Sellers lists 291 "plain" Model 1853 Shotguns identified in Sharps factory production records with one "engraved" and one "extra engraved" shotgun. Sellers also states that "some of the guns listed in the factory records as plain are obviously factory gold-inlaid and high grade engraved". This shotgun is a very rare Model 1853 Slant-Breech Sharps variation.

The engraving is distinct and the factory markings are clear. There is light-moderate flash pitting on the top of the frame and loading groove. The breechblock has a dark patina with heavy flash pitting. The buttplate and barrel band have a dark patina. The engraving on the buttplate heel shows moderate wear.
