Rare Factory Engraved Perry Breech Loading Percussion Sporting Rifle
Manufactured circa late 1850s - 1860 by Alonzo Perry, Newark, New Jersey. The total manufactured is believed to be around 1,500 total of the Perry carbine and sporting rifles (an estimated 500 carbines were sold commercially and to military contracts). This breech loading rifle has a unique one piece lever loop, trigger guard and breechblock, which are pulled down for loading. The trigger is mounted in the assembly. The rear sight, tang sight, and tubular magazine are missing. The sporting rifle was made in various calibers, barrel lengths and weights. This rifle gauges at 45 caliber and features a heavy octagon barrel with a brass blade front sight. The receiver, top of the breechblock, hammer, trigger guard/lever, and buttplate tang are engraved with floral scroll patterns. The top of the breechblock is marked "PERRY PATENT ARM CO. / NEWARK N.J." and "A.D. PERRY / PATENTED / 1855". Smooth forearm and straight grip stock. Matching numbers on receiver, barrel, and breechblock.

Condition: Very good. The rifle has a smooth dark patina with some minor pitting (deeper pitting on the barrel). The wood is very good with a filled wood repair near the lower tang and a couple minor dents on the forearm, along with some minor dings and scratches. Mecahanically fine. Missing rear sight.
