Rare Factory Documented Winchester Model 1886 Extra Light-Weight Takedown Rifle with Special Order Extra Barrel

Manufactured in 1909. This rifle is accompanied by a special order round extra lightweight 45-70 barrel with the full length magazine tube and deluxe multi-point checkered walnut forearm. The barrel is 22 inches in length with a dovetailed raised blade front sight and an adjustable rear sporting sight. The top of the barrel is marked with the two-line address/patent dates ahead of the rear sight, "NICKEL STEEL" on the left next to the rear sight, "45-70" at the breech and the Winchester oval proof is marked on top at the breech. The barrel presently on the rifle is 24 inches in length, round with a raised ramp dovetailed blade front sight with an ivory bead and an adjustable rear sporting sight. The top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight is marked with the two-line address "MANUFACTURED BY THE/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A.-" and "-PAT. OCT. 14. 1884. JAN. 20. 1885.-" on the left side. The two line nickel steel/smokeless powder marking is on the left side of the barrel next to the rear sight. "33 W.C.F." is marked on top of the barrel at the breech, and the Winchester oval proof is marked below the caliber marking and on top of the receiver. The lower tang is marked with the 1884/1885 patent dates and the serial number. The receiver is blue, the hammer and lever casehardened. There is a tang mounted Lyman peep sight with cup disk. Mounted with a special order extra fancy multi-point checkered walnut forearm and pistol grip stock with a Winchester hard rubber grip cap and checkered shotgun buttplate. The accompanying factory letter verifies the takedown rifle configuration, 33 caliber, round barrel, plain trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, Lyman leaf and Lyman combination rear sight with cup disc, full magazine, rubber shotgun buttplate with an interchangeable 45/70 22 inch round barrel, full magazine, extra lightweight, fancy checkered forearm, Lyman leaf sight, nickel steel, Winchester high velocity barrel, that it was received in the warehouse on July 27, 1909 and shipped to order number 211521 on July 28, 1909.

Extremely fine. The rifle and spare barrel and magazine tube retain 90% plus of the original blue and casehardened finish. The extra barrel has 95% plus of the blue finish with some thinning and one light scratch on the top, and some takedown wear on the magazine below the band. There is some minor surface pitting on the left side of the forearm cap. The takedown collar shows more handling wear and retains 50% of the blue finish. The receiver has retains 85% plus of the original blue finish with handling wear on high points. The blue on the top of the receiver is slightly thinning slightly. The finish on the underside of the receiver has several light scratches and shows slightly more wear. The blue finish on the loading gate has faded to a silver-gray patina. The case colors on the hammer and lever have faded and show wear but remain 85%. The stock and forearm are excellent overall and retain 90% plus of the high polish piano finish. The checkering is sharp. Wear is limited to a few minor handling marks. The .45-70 barrel retains 75% of the original blue finish with some age discoloration along the top. Most of the blue finish is present on the takedown collar. There is some finish loss and light pitting on the right side of the magazine ahead of the forearm cap. The right side of the forearm cap has some finish loss and there is light pitting on the bottom. The forearm is excellent with sharp checkering and retains 90% plus of the piano finish. This is an outstanding example of a rare Winchester Model 1886 Extra Light-Weight Takedown Rifle with special order extra barrel.
