Rare Factory Documented Nickel Plated Early Production Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Carbine with Factory Letter

This is a factory documented nickel plated Winchester First Model 1873 carbine which has the grooved guides for the dust cover on either side of the receiver. The dust cover has the raised thumb print. The factory letter confirms carbine configuration, 20 inch barrel and nickel finish. The carbine was received in the warehouse on August 7, 1874 and was shipped on the same day, order number 1694. The carbine has a blade front sight integral to the barrel band, two leaf rear sight, saddle ring and staple on the left side of the receiver and full length magazine tube. The upper tang is marked "MODEL 1873" and the serial number is marked on the lower tang. There are no other visible markings. Mounted on a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with carbine buttplate. The buttplate compartment contains a three piece cleaning rod.

Fair. The carbine has a smooth gray patina with overall extensive minor pitting. Traces of original nickel plating remain on the receiver. The refinished wood is good with a couple hairline cracks, a couple putty filled repairs (removed sling swivel on buttstock) and some scattered minor handling marks. The underside of the stock has a wood filled repair. Mechanically fine.
