Rare Engraved Charles Lancaster Tubelock Double Barrel Shotgun

Manufactured circa 1818-1820. This shotgun features the unique Tubelock ignition system invented by Joseph Manton in 1818. The tube (or pill) lock was an improvement over Alexander Forsyth's scent-bottle lock system. Instead of storing a reserve of fulminate in a container they were now single use hollow tubes filled with fulminate powder. The hammer of the gun is sharpened and when it fell it crushed the tube causing the fulminates to detonate. It was more reliable than Forsyth's design, however it was overshadowed by the invention of the percussion cap which was adopted by the armies of Britain, France, Russia and America to replace the flintlock. The top of the rib is marked "CHARLES LANCASTER 151 NEW BOND ST LONDON". The barrels feature recessed breeches, with a platinum inlaid bands and recessed platinum "CHARLES/LANCASTER/LONDON" hallmarks. The underside of the barrels are marked "CL", are numbered "770" and are marked with a "Crown/GP" and "Crown/V" proof mark. The barrel tang is decorated with floral scroll engraving. The locks and hammers are floral scroll engraved with a geometric border and "WILLIAM MOORE" on the locks. The inside of each lock is marked "12" and "311" and additionally "I.B." on the right lock (consignors notes). Steel furniture, engraved pineapple forearm tailpipe and trigger guard finial, engraved trigger guard, correct wooden ramrod with brass ends and mounted with a checkered walnut straight grip half stock with serrated bare butt. Length of pull is 13 7/8 inches.
