Rare Ella Hawley Crossett Pinback 25mm diameter
Rare Ella Hawley Crossett Pinback, 25mm diameter with 1.5" red, white, and blue ribbon. The button is in excellent condition with nice tonal contrasts, however the ribbon is frayed and split in two places. This item was issued as a tribute to Ella Hawley Crossett, who was born in Gainsville, New York, on March 21, 1853. Her rise in the suffrage movement began as early as 1890 when she attended the National Woman Suffrage Association Convention in Washington, D.C. as a national delegate. In 1891, she organized a suffrage convention herself in Warsaw, New York at which both Anna Howard Shaw and Susan B. Anthony spoke. She was elected as President of the Warsaw Political Equality Club at that convention. In 1902, she attained statewide prominence when she was elected as president of the New York State Suffrage Association, a position that she was to hold until 1910. This is the first time this rare suffrage pin has ever come up in auction, but it is definitely Crossett. Since Crossett was a local rather than national figure, this pin obviously saw limited distribution.

Shipping: Small Collectibles (view shipping information)
