This is an excellent example of a Colt Model 1900 Automatic pistol, serial number 64, that was manufactured in 1900. This very early production pistol has the distinctive, unaltered "sight safety" spur hammer, slide with grip serrations on the rear and seven-shot magazine. The pistol has the Colt high polish, commercial blue, finish with niter blue trigger and color casehardened hammer and safety. The highly figured walnut grips have a varnish finish. The right side of the slide is roll-stamped: "AUTOMATIC COLT/ CALIBRE 38 RIMLESS SMOKELESS" in two lines. The left side of the slide is roll-stamped: "BROWNING's PATENT"/PAT'D APRIL 20. 1897 in a two-line block followed by "COLT'S PATENT FIRE ARMS MFG. CO./HARTFORD. CONN. U.S.A." in two lines. The encircled Rampant Colt trademark is stamped behind the left grip serration. The serial number, "64", is stamped on the left side of frame above the trigger guard bow. The magazine has a blue finish and the floor plate is not marked. The Model 1900 is historically significant as the first of many successful John M. Browning pistol designs and the first production Colt automatic pistol. Only about 3500 Model 1900 Automatic pistols were manufactured between 1900 and 1903. Surviving examples with un-altered sight safeties are scarce.
