Rare & Early, 19th C. Baldwin & Hill Dag Knife
This is a fantastic, rare and authentic circa 1850 American Indian Dag Knife made by Baldwin & Hill Company in New York. The knife was documented as coming in two versions; a forged lance or spear head like this one, and a second featuring a typical dag style blade that was supplied with a wooden haft with an engraved scene on the handle. The lance spear blade, such as this example, could be used either as a hunting spear blade or Native-hafted piece, as this one is. The grips are hardwood haft with two copper pins and a pewter inlaid five-point star on one side. The knife shows two large rectangular notches, a raised median running down both sides (a documented early weapons feature) and the correct heavy stamped rectangular Baldwin & Hill stamp. The knife shows the proper signs of true age and use and is in very well kept condition. Provenance: From the Ted Levy collection. Overall measures 12 ¼ inch in length.
