This is an example of 1 of the 600 Model 1855 carbines purchased on contract by the "U.S. Army. Marked with standard three line address on the barrel ahead of the rear sight, "US/JH/P" on the upper left at the breech. The upper tang has the "SHARPS/PATENT/1848" marking in front of the serial number. "EDWARD MAYNARD / PATENTEE 1845" is marked on the primer cover. The matching serial number is marked on the bottom of the barrel under the forearm. Brass blade front and folding leaf rear sights and mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a brass barrel band, patch box and buttplate. The buttplate tang is stamped with a small "H" and the inside of the patch box door and wood in the patch box are stamped with the number "10". There are two visible cartouches on the upper front of the stock wrist on the left side. This carbine is pictured, identified by serial number and briefly described on pages 15 and 16 of "Military Sharps Rifles & Carbines Volume I" by Hopkins.

Condition: Good. With the exception of the lever, which has a smooth dark patina, the metal surfaces have a bright appearance with some scattered minor pitting on the barrel and the hammer. The wood has been varnished and remains very good with lightly visible original cartouches, some scattered minor dents and dings. The markings are clear. The primer door does not secure. The action is very good.
