Rare Documented U.S. Colt 1937 Production Model 1911A1 Semi-Automatic Pistol

Manufactured in 1937, after a 13-year gap in Army 1911 orders. Round blade front and flat top notch rear sights, with the two-line, two-block address and patent dates on the left side of the slide around the Rampant Colt logo and "MODEL OF 1911.U.S.ARMY" on the right ahead of the ejector port. The "MODEL OF 1911" nomenclature was eliminated when the model designation changed to 1911A1, however, Clawson (p.273) notes a drawing revision dated January 15, 1936 called for the marking "MODEL OF 1911" to be used, thus a 1911A1 marked as a 1911. A rare gun, indeed. The frame is marked "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" and with the exception of the proof on the barrel, the gun does not bear any inspector mark which is a characteristic of early first variation 1937 Model 1911A1s (Meadows, p.31). Fitted with a short milled trigger, wide hammer, arched mainspring housing, full-checkered wood grips, unmarked two-tone magazine and a Colt barrel.

Very fine, with 75% of the faded original blue finish, showing mild takedown lines on the slide and frame, bright edge wear, areas of brown patina, tiny amounts of pitting on the slide and front strap and scattered handling marks. The grips are fine, with mild dents. Mechanically excellent. 1937 production Colt Model 1911A1's are extremely rare!
