Winchester Model 1894 Fancy Takedown Rifle with factory engraving and gold inlaid bands on the barrel and receiver. The rifle is accompanied by a letter from the Cody Firearms Museum that states that it was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on July 15, 1898. The letter lists the rifle features as 38/55 caliber round barrel, plain trigger, fancy pistol grip, carved style D, extra light, plain trigger, fancy wood stock with pistol grip, front sight 1/2 inch from muzzle, engraved and inlaid, $24.00 and, drop at heel 2 3/4 inches. The rifle has a blue barrel, half-magazine and receiver. The forearm cap, hammer, lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The forearm cap, top of the barrel near the receiver, takedown collar, receiver, edges of the bolt, sides and bottom of the lever, heel of the buttplate and screw heads are embellished with Winchester "No.4" engraving as illustrated on page 11 of the 1897 edition of "HIGHLY FINISHED WINCHESTER RIFLES". The decoration is described as arabesque scrolls, fancy border and line work, and outline engraving. The No. 4 engraving features detailed game scenes with a grizzly bear on the right side of the receiver and hunter bagging two elk on the left side of the receiver. Gold bands are inlaid on the barrel at the breech on the edge of the takedown collar and the rear edge of the receiver. The forearm and pistol grip stock are highly figured fancy grain walnut with Winchester "Style D" checkered and relief-carved oak leaf and acorns. The stock has a black hard rubber pistol grip cap embossed with "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS". The stock and forearm have an oiled high polish piano finish. The round barrel has a Winchester Express front sight with colored bead and a three-leaf folding Express rear sight with platinum sight lines graduated for 50, 100 and 200 yards. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped for rear sight. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the legend "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/- WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.- ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation "38-55" is stamped on the left side of the barrel ahead of the receiver. The serial number, "46307" is stamped across the bottom of the front edge of the receiver. The upper tang is roll-stamped "MODEL 1894/-WINCHESTER-/PAT.AUG.21.1894" in an engraved panel.

Stock: walnut checkered
Gauge: 38-55 WCF
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 46307
Condition:
Fine. The rifle is all original and retains 50% of the original blue and casehardened finish. The barrel has most of the blue finish intact with some minor scattered handling marks and several very small spots of pitting. Most of the blue finish on the takedown collar, receiver and bolt has faded to a silver-gray patina. The case colors on the forearm cap, hammer, lever and buttplate have faded to a mottled silver gray patina. The engraving and highly detailed game scenes are crisp and the factory markings are clear. The fancy grain walnut stock and forearm are both very good. The relief carved oak leaves and acorns and the fine checkered panels show moderate handling wear. Most of the oiled piano finish is present on the stock and forearm. The stock and forearm have a few minor dents and scratches that do not detract from the appearance of the rifle. This is a rare example of a special order factory engraved and gold inlaid Winchester Model 1894 Fancy Takedown Rifle with would enhance the finest collection of Winchester rifles.
