This extra ordinary deluxe Winchester Model 1866 Musket was manufactured in 1876. Which was the same year as our Nation's Centennial. (Winchester displayed at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition in that year and quite possible this musket was made for that event.) The Third Model Musket has a full nickel plated finish. The forearm and highly figured walnut buttstock have a high polish piano finish. The musket has a 27" round barrel and 24" magazine, block/bayonet lug, front sight, folding leaf rear sight, sling swivels on the upper barrel band and butt and carbine style buttplate with sliding trap. The butt trap contains a nickel plated, four piece, jointed cleaning rod. The musket is complete with a 15 1/4" socket bayonet. The heel of the buttplate is stippled and decorated with engraved scrollwork around the upper buttplate screw. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "WINCHESTER"S - REPEATING - ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT. / KING'S -IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." in two lines. The serial number "123106" is stamped on the lower tang behind the lever latch and in the inside of the upper tang inlet on the stock. The left side of the lower tang is stamped "XXX" and "N.F." underneath the stock.
BBL: 27 inch round
Stock: burl walnut
Gauge: 44 RF
Finish: nickel
Grips:
Serial Number: 123106
Condition: Excellent. The rifle retains 95% plus of the nickel plated finish. The nickel plating has a few minor thin spots on the brass frame and side plate and there is scattered flaking on the loading gate and sides of the loading lever. The barrel markings and frame serial number are light. The stock is in excellent condition with some scattered, light, handling wear. The forearm has several minor handling marks. The bayonet is in fine overall condition with some moderate age discoloration. The bore is bright. This is truly extra ordinary example of a Third Model Winchester 1866 Musket with the original socket bayonet.
