Rare Colt factory Berdan conversion of the Colt Model 1861 Special musket, .58 cal., 36” barrel, bright finish, wood stock. This unique and desirable gun is in overall very good condition showing a breech that removes backward and up exposing the loading ramp to the barrel. The bore is very good, the action crisp, the lock plate is marked U.S. Colt’s PT. F.A Mfg Co. Hartford, CT and dated 1864. The breech device is case hardened and there is an “A” and “Steel” stamping on the left breech flat of the barrel. The wood is very good and nicely fit to the lock plate and the rest of the metal components. Information is available in The Book of Colt Firearms, by Sutherland and Wilson on pages 475-476.
