Rare Colt Paterson Model 1839 Shotgun

Model 1839 Revolving Shotgun manufactured at Colt's Paterson, New Jersey, factory c. 1839-1841. The total production of Model 1839 Shotguns was less than 225 guns; the Model 1839 Shotgun is one of the rarest Colt longarms. The shotgun has a round, 16 gauge, 32-inch Damascus finished barrel and flat-sided, brazed lug with beveled corners. The right side of the lug is roll-stamped "-Patent Arms M'g. Co. Paterson, NJ.-Colt's Pt. -" in one line. The barrel has a half-moon profile rear sight and a period replacement, half moon, brass front sight blade. The barrel lug has a two-groove wedge. The 3 1/2-inch, five-shot cylinder has rounded shoulders. The serial number, "54", is stamped on the face of the barrel lug and the cylinder turning ring. The walnut stock has a crescent shaped, carbine style buttplate.

Good. The carbine is complete and appears to be original with the exception of the wedge and period replacement front sight blade. The barrel has traces of the Damascus finish. The rear portion of the barrel, barrel lug, frame, trigger guard an crescent buttplate all have moderate-heavy pitting with a silver-gray patina. The cylinder has a dark brown patina with light-moderate flash pitting on the percussion nipple and front and rear face. Traces of the detailed, three panel, cylinder scenes are visible. The tang screws are battered. The left side of the stock is period inlaid with a German silver eight-pointed star. Period German silver half-moon and oval inlays on both sides of the stock wrist cover old repairs. There is a crack on the left side of the stock wrist between the recoil shield and the tang. The stock is in fair-good condition with moderate wear. This is a solid example of one of the rarest Colt longarms.
