Rare Colt Paterson Model 1839 Carbine
This is a solid example of a highly desirable Colt Model 1839 carbine with attached loading lever and round back, six-shot, cylinder. The carbine has a .525 caliber, smoothbore barrel. The barrel is round with bevels at the breech. The barrel is fitted with a pin front sight at the muzzle and block type rear sight on the lug. The frame is partially flared to the right of the hammer and fully flared on the left side of the recoil shield. The carbine has a scroll trigger guard and a walnut stock with iron buttplate. The left side of the barrel lug is roll-stamped with the script legend: "Patent Arms M'g. Co.Paterson, N.J.-Colt's Pt.". The legend on the left side of the lug indicates that the carbine was originally completed with the attached loading lever assembly. The cylinder has the elaborate roll-engraved markings that feature three oval panels that depict: (1) a hunter and lion, (2) a naval engagement and (3) a battle scene. The serial number, "743", is visible on the rear face of the barrel lug, the rear face of the cylinder, the cylinder turning ring and the heads of both buttplate screws. The bottom of the wedge is numbered "748". The Model 1839 carbine was the most successful Colt firearm produced during the Paterson period. Colt manufactured approximately 950 Model 1839 carbines in the Paterson, New Jersey, factory between 1838 and 1841 including 360 carbines that were purchased by the U.S. Government.
BBL: 24 inch part round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 525
Finish: brown
Grips:
Serial Number: 743
Condition: Very good. The carbine shows moderate to heavy wear and has a dark, plum brown, age patina on the barrel, frame, cylinder, trigger guard and buttplate. There is moderate flash pitting on the side of the barrel lug and the cylinder faces and percussion nipples. The cylinder retains most of the elaborate, clearly visible original roll-engraved, scene. The legend on the left side of the barrel lug and the serial numbers are sharp. The stock has been refinished and has a professionally repaired and barely detectible crack on the right wrist. This is a very good example of a rare and important Colt Paterson Model 1839 carbine.
