This is a solid example of a Colt-Burgess lever action rifle that was manufactured circa 1883-1885. The rifle has a blued receiver, full-octagon barrel and full-length magazine, casehardened forearm cap, hammer, loading lever and crescent buttplate. The stock and forearm are black walnut with an oil finish. The barrel has a dovetail mounted, nickel-silver, front sight blade and sporting style rear sight. The buttplate has a sliding brass trap door. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "COLT'S PT.F.A.MFG. CO.HARTFORD.CT. U.S.A./+PAT.JAN.7.78.OCT. 19.75.APR.1.79.DEC.&.80.DEC.13.81.JAN.3.82.+" with crosses at either end of the second line. The Rampant Colt trademark is roll-stamped on the left side of the receiver. The serial number, "3365" is stamped on the lower receiver tang behind the trigger. Colt manufactured 3,810 Burgess Model rifles and 2,593 carbines between 1883 and 1885.
BBL: 25 1/2 inch octagon
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 44-40
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips:
Serial Number: 3365
Condition: Fine. The barrel and magazine have a very attractive, plum brown patina. The surfaces of the barrel and magazine are smooth and the edges of the barrel are sharp. The barrel legend is crisp. The casehardened finish on the forearm cap, hammer, lever and buttplate have faded to a mottled, gray-brown patina. There is some light traces of blue present on the lower right, right side of the receiver but the balance of the receiver, hammer, lever and forearm cap are smooth. The face of the buttplate has some light pitting and discoloration. The loading gate and bolt have 75% or more of the original blue finish. Most of the niter blue finish is present on the frame screws. The stock and forearm are both in fine condition with only a few light handling marks. This is a fine example of a Colt-Burgess rifle.
