This is a commercially purchased Civil War period Jassath patent cartridge box for .32 caliber rimfire shells. The box is made of light weight black leather and the outer flap has a red leather lining. The box has a leather inner flap which covers a wooden block drilled for three staggered rows of six .32 cartridges each. It holds 18 rounds and has two leather belt loops on the back. The inside of the outer flap is stamped with the maker's cartouche. "G. JASSATH / PATENTED / SEP. 17 1861". This is a scarce example of the type of privately purchased cartridge box carried during the Civil War by Federal Infantry Officers who frequently carried small caliber revolvers.
