This is an example of and original Confederate Morse breech loading carbine manufactured by the State Military Works in Greenville, South Carolina in 1864. The State Military Works manufactured approximately 1000 Morse carbines. This carbine has the Type III action which is locked by a latch the top of the iron breechblock. The round barrel has a dovetail mounted brass front sight blade and dovetail mounted fixed rear sight. The carbine has a brass frame, an integral trigger guard and brass buttplate. It is fitted with a butternut stock and forearm. A iron ramrod with brass tip is mounted in the forearm and secured with a single brass pipe. The letter "B" and the serial number "499" are stamped on the underside of the receiver in front of the trigger guard; these are the only visible markings on the carbine. Morse carbines were issued primarily to South Carolina militia but saw some service with other Confederate forces.
