1) Connecticut & Nevada SMC Stock, located at the rare mining camp of Averill AND signed by president Averill!!! The mine owned the mining camp of Averill which was in the canyon below the county seat of La Plata, Churchill County. This certificate is signed by president Roger Averill, Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut. No coincidence here. # 78 for 500 shares to H. S. Harrison on October 20, 1865. Signed by secretary F. M. Wheeler(?) and president Roger Averill. Located in Mountain Wells district, Churchill County, Nevada. Issued in payment for mining property. 25c Certificate revenue stamp. Pre-stamped with circular October 14th stamp. Minor issues (nick top center, small tear bottom left), over all extremely nice! Two underground mining vignettes. Fred Mayer & Co., lithographer, New York. The Connecticut and Nevada had seven ledges and were working on three: the Satellite, Vermont and Washington. They had 2,000 feet of tunnels and shafts. Rock near the surface assayed at $30 to $135 and at one hundred and forty feet $1,500 a ton. The Mountain Wells district is usually referred to as the La Plata district. Includes more information on the mine, rare camp, and Averill.
2) Silver Lode Mining Company early Nevada Mining Bond; We don't see many bonds from Nevada mining companies! This is certificate 61 issued to Edward Robinson, Trustee. Robinson would be the company secretary in 1866. Incorporated in New York. $1,000 bond. Includes original company seal. Signed by president J. Trumbull Smith and secretary Greene(?). The central vignette features two men in underground mining scene. Other vignette of three men underground, with two men lowering and raising ore buckets at left, and small vignette of miner leaning on pick in lower right. Black border. Mayer & Co., printers. The most active district in Churchill at the time was La Plata, with a population of 150, which also served as the county set from 1864-1868. This successful camp attracted enough capital to build a $125,000 mill by the Silver Wave Co., but lacked sufficient ore to make money. Another company is cited as having erected another mine and mill at Averill at the same time, suspected to be this company. US certificate stamp at right. 14.5 x 13" with remaining seven coupons. Averill, Mountain Wells District, Churchill County Nevada
