Rare Cased Engraved Webley Model 1853 Longspur Percussion Revolver with Accessories

Manufactured c. 1855. The revolver features the distinctive extended Longspur hammer, .48 caliber five-shot cylinder and seven inch rifled octagon barrel. The loading lever is attached to the left side of the barrel. The barrel is secured to the frame by a large butterfly nut. The butt is fitted with a lanyard ring. The two-piece walnut grips are fully checkered. The revolver has a silver plated finish with niter blue loading lever. The side plates, edges and bottom of the frame, butt, bottom of the trigger guard, top of the hammer and forward edge of the cylinder are finely engraved with flourishes of highly detailed English scroll work. "WEBLEY'S PATENT" is engraved on a scroll on the left side plate. The top of the barrel is engraved with the dealer's name "BLISSETT LIVERPOOL". The back strap is engraved "BY HER MAJESTY'S ROYAL LETTERS PATENT". The cylinder chambers are externally numbered 1-5. Small Birmingham proof and inspection marks are stamped on the lower left barrel flat and above each cylinder chamber. The matching serial number, "1355" is stamped on the inside of the trigger guard and inside of the hammer spur and engraved across the top of the back strap. The revolver is complete with a mahogany ten-compartment case lined with green baize. A gold plated brass shield is inlaid in the lid. The case contains a small bag-shaped powder flask with gold plated adjustable charger and brown lacquer body, ebony handle screwdriver, ebony handle nipple wrench, brass single cavity bullet mold for .48 bore conical bullets, wooden cleaning rod with ebony handle, James Dixon pewter oil bottle, 250-cap japanned tin of Eley percussion caps with white paper label, japanned tin of "Lubricating Paste for All Bullets" with blue paper label, key and four .48 bore conical lead bullets. The well-designed high quality Model 1853 Longspur percussion revolver was the equivalent of the Colt Paterson in history of Webley revolvers. It was fully the equal of the contemporary Colt Model 1848 Dragoon or Model 1851 Navy revolvers in quality and serviceability.

Very fine. The revolver retains 70% of the original silver plated finish. Some of the plated finish has flaked on the back 1/4 of the barrel, the forward edge of the frame and the front face of the cylinder. The cylinder has scattered flaking which is heaviest on the rear edges. Scattered light flaking is present on the frame, trigger guard and back strap. The loading lever retains 30% of the niter blue finish. The grips are excellent with very crisp checkering. The patent markings on the back strap are difficult to read. The other markings and the serial numbers are crisp. The action is tight and functions perfectly. The case is very good. The case exterior has scattered minor handling marks. The green baize lining is very good overall with some oil spots and patches of age discoloration. There are small tears in the lining from contact with the front sight and hammer spur. One compartment corner is broken. The powder flask, screw driver, nipple wrench, cleaning rod, oil bottle and bullet mold are all very fine-excellent with minimal handing wear. The labels on the percussion cap and bullet grease tins are faded but intact. The cap tin contains one or two percussion caps. This is a very fine example of a rare and important Webley Model 1853 Longspur revolver with case and accessories.
