Rare C. 1848 John Quincy Adams Patch Box. From the same manufacturer as the Zachary Taylor example also offered in this auction, it features a beautiful "folk-art" portrait of Adams on the obverse, and "Forget Me Not" on the reverse side, both covered by a thin piece of glass held in place by a fine embossed gilt foil trim. The whole box is in the form of a simulated book, which is quite elegantly rendered. As pointed out in the description of the Taylor item, these boxes were made around the time of Adams' death in 1848 and Taylor's in 1850. Of fragile construction, they are notorious for condition problems: cracked glass, separated lids, missing foil trim, moisture stains under the glass, etc. This one is a superior example, suffering only from a few tiny, light marks on the front and a small piece of missing trim on the reverse (which can be restored with relative ease). The Adams is considerably scarcer than the Taylor in this form, and in general, display items for him are tougher. The box measures 1.75" x 2.75" x .60".
