This is an important and unique piece of 19th Century Sioux Ledger Art. The piece is signed “Buffalo Warrior Dakota Sioux 1899” and features a warrior wearing a Buffalo Horn Headdress, beaded leggings, painted war shield, and feathered lance on horseback, attacking another warrior with bow and arrow. The piece is drawn on a page of old 19th Century reservation ledger book paper, which is numbered 241 and signed in graphite. The interesting depiction shows the horse’s tail being tied together and not flowing free. Sioux Warriors were said to tie their horse’s tail before going into battle. The Indian being overcome by the warrior on horseback is seen with knee-high leggings, breechclout, and a long face with a prominent nose and long hair tied back; the Indian is thought to likely depict a Crow Indian, a known enemy of the Sioux. The ledger art is in a vintage frame with old glass that measures 14.5 inches by 11.5 inches. Authentic 19th Century ledger book artwork is very scarce, with this being a nice representation.
