Manufactured in the 1880 with a total production of a few thousand. The top of the barrel rib is marked with the two line address/patent dates and the left side of the frame below the cylinder is marked "38 CAL.". Pinned blade front and frame notch rear sights, sliding loading gate and folding hammer (without patent marking). Matching serial number marked on the butt, back of the barrel lug and on the rear face of the cylinder. The inside of the hammer spur is marked "715". The All blue finish with a casehardened hammer and trigger, and fitted with black checkerboard hard rubber grips. Complete with an original brown hinged lid box with "FOLDING HAMMER" end label on the lid flap and "Merwin, Hulbert & Co. / Automatic Police Revolver / 38Cal. DOUBLE ACTION 3 1/2 inch" end label on the box. The inside of the lid has the Merwin, Hulbert & Co's Automatic instructions label.

Condition: Very fine. The revolver retains 75% original blue finish with overall scattered minor dings, areas of smooth gray patina, edge wear and thinning on the cylinder. The hammer and trigger retain 60% original case colors. The grips are very good with some dings and scuffs, and crisp checkering. The markings are clear. The action is excellent. The box is very good with a couple separated corners on the lid, a separated side panel and some tears and heavy wear. The end labels have some scuffing and flaking on the edges.
