Rare Bergmann Patent Model 1896 Semi-Automatic Pistol with Shoulder Stock Frame Mount
This is a nice example of a rare Bergmann Patent Model 1896 Number 4 semi-automatic pistol which is chambered for the unique Bergmann 8mm cartridge. It is estimated that less than 200 of these pistols were manufactured. The left side of the barrel is marked with a "crown / "crown/U" proofmark and "156/14" and the same double crown over "U" proof mark is marked on the left side of the barrel extension. The left side of the frame is marked "PATENT / BREVETE / S.G.D.G.". The right front of the frame is marked with the serial number, the right side of the trigger "11", the left rear of the frame is marked with a crest of a man backed by radiance and holding a cross, marked "GAGGENAU/ V.C.S./ SUHL" and the right side of the slide wedge is marked "4". Blue finish with straw colored small parts, integral lanyard ring on the butt, and fitted with checkered walnut grips numbered to the gun. Produced contemporary to the Borchardt pistol, the Model 1896 was a very early commercial semi-automatic, which integrated a 5-round en bloc magazine and a blowback driven mechanism.

Gauge: 8 mm

Condition: Very fine. The pistol retains 85% original blue finish with thinning to a smooth gray patina on the barrel, a mottled grayish brown on the backstrap, high edge wear and some scattered light spotting. Almost all of the original straw colors remain on the small parts and most of the original bright niter blue finish remains on the safety with loss due to normal usage. The grips are excellent with a few chips on the checkering, mild wear and crisp checkering. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent.
