Rare Bacon's Patent 16 Gauge Black Powder Double Barrel Bolt Action Shotgun

This shotgun features the unique Bacon's patent individual breech bolts (1870). Each bolt has its own push down release lever. The bolt handles are knurled and the bolts floral scroll engraved. Lt. Francis Bacon had a short service career with the Royal Marine Artillery. The shotgun also features an ejection port ahead of the trigger guard which has been extended, possibly in the period of usage, by piercing an extruded ejection rim. The top of the barrel rib between the bolts is marked "BACON'S PATENT No 35". Single bead sight, engraved trigger guard, tang safety and mounted with a checkered walnut straight grip half stock with a silver initial oval, and checkered bare butt with engraved heel and toe plate. Length of pull is 14 inches.

Fair. The metal surfaces have a mottled gray patina with scattered minor pitting, heavier under the forearm. The stock is good with the ejection port period pieced in. Overall there are minor dents and scratches with the checkering showing minor-moderate wear. The action and safety function well.
