Rare Antique Perhaps Composite U.S. Springfield Model 1855 Percussion Rifled Carbine, NVSN, .58 cal., 22" rifled round barrel, small blade front and two-leaf rear sights, any markings at breech being obscured by pitting/dings; beveled lockplate marked "(spread-wing eagle/shield)" over "US" ahead of hammer, "Spring/Field/1851" vertically behind; iron mountings include trigger guard with long lower tang and distinctive large round sling-ring at rear of loop, straight buttplate, single spring-retained band, and unusual horseshoe-shaped swivel retaining the captive button-tip ramrod; brass L-shaped sideplate and nosecap. Stock is of oil-stained walnut and three-quarter length. Mfg'd ca. 1855-56, in qty. of only 1,020 guns. Condition is good, the steel surfaces having a deep brown patina with scattered dings and pitting, excepting the hammer, guard and lock, which are smooth gunmetal gray; lock edges and markings are sharp. Stock is sound showing vestigial left-side inspector's cartouche, has a 1.5" secure crack emanating from top-right of buttplate, cracks and small losses at rear of lockplate and front of sideplate, a 5.25" replaced section below the nosecap. Enigmatic is the "1851" lock date; it may have come from a M1842 musket or one of the M1847 musketoons, but fits perfectly and appears to have always been part of this gun. The .58 cal. rifled bore is correct, as a few were so altered from the standard .54 cal.; other features appear correct. Action is smooth, bore shows moderate rust erosion and good rifling. Est.: $2,000-$3,000. (Antique)
