Rare Ames model 1 boxlock US martial pistol dated 1842 with pointed back area of lock, one of only 13 known to date. .54 caliber smoothbore, marked “N.P. Ames, Springfield Mass” at center of lock. With raised lockplate. No markings on breech end of barrel and no cartouche. Stocks slightly more slender than later examples, and grip slightly longer. Only 300 estimated to have been produced and as mentioned, 13 currently known. Refer Flayderman 6A-045. The pistol remains in good to very good condition showing considerable brown going to a darkish patina. Some scattered light to moderate pinprick pitting and some slightly heavier pitting in the breech area. The markings are sharp, the wood is good with a couple of small dings, minor imperfections, a slight stress crack, and a couple small losses at the edges of the butt. There is an “X” marking just behind the triggerguard at the area of the grip. The initials “J.M.” are scratched on the brass butt plate. The original rammer and keeper are retained and show a serial #24. A very rare and significant variation. Est: $2,500 - $5,000+
