Ames, Springfield, Mass” at center of lock with raised lock plate. No markings onbreech end of barrel and no cartouche. Stocks slightly more slender than later examples and grip slightly longer. The pistol remains ingood to very good condition showing considerable brown going to a darkish patina. Some scattered light to moderate pinprick pitting and some slightly heavier pitting in the breech area. The markings are sharp, the wood is good with a couple of small dings, minor imperfections, a slight stress crack, and a couple small losses at the edges of the butt. There is an “X” marking just behind the trigger guard at the area of the grip. The initials “J.M.” are scratched on the brassbutt plate.
