Rare Experimental Cavalry Saber, 1905-1906, by Ames (A.S. Co.), 36-3/4'' overall, 30'' blade with 10'' unsharpened false edge, blade marked ''A.S. Co./(flaming bomb)/1906''; reverse marked ''U.S.''; obverse additionally marked with the number ''41''. Peterson notes in his book ''The American Sword 1775-1945'', page 37, that the example he observed was marked ''44''. Wood grip is 6'' in length covered with skateskin, which is wound with two strands of twisted and two strands of plain brass wire. Grip is cast with iron that has been crosshatched to resemble skateskin texture. Leather-covered blue steel scabbard with two suspension rings and not mfg'd with a drag at tip. Possibly rack number ''22'' is lightly embossed near throat. Condition is about fine. Handle with moderate wear thru the skateskin to reveal the walnut beneath; wrap is near perfect. Blued guard shows light thinning and toning and retains approx. 75%-80% original finish. Leather-covered scabbard w!
ith light scuffs and wear and small area of missing leather worn thru at top hanger band. Original leather washer is present. A beautiful early 1900 sword that is rarely encountered today. Est.: $8,000-$12,000.
