From a New Orleans Louisiana estate. Very nice rare American large Gold & Daguerreotype portrait brooch of a young handsome well dressed gentleman. The Daguerreotype is set under bezel glass setting. The man wears his hair fashionably side-parted and crest-shaped. The gold scroll frame is in the Rococo Revival style. Circa 1850.
Photographic jewellery quickly became popular in the early days of photography as a decorative and personal way to display pictures of loved ones. In 1839, the Daguerreotype, invented by Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre [1787-1851], became the first photographic process to be announced to the public. Daguerreotypes are unique images which may appear as a positive or negative depending on how light hits the surface. Condition: Daguerreotype has some typical discoloration around the silver image. 1" 1/2 by 2".
